  • Description

President Jomo Kenyatta and his wife attended a colourful ceremony at Nairobi's Uhuru Park on Monday (June ???) to celebrate Madaraka Day -- the seventh anniversary of Kenyan internal self-Government.

The Presidential party was greeted by a military parade headed by a band. Nearly 50,000 people watched a march-past of the Kenyan Armed Forces and police including women recruits.

In a speech to the Madaraka Day crowd President Kenyatta said that Kenya's Government, employers and Unions are to cooperate in a new tripartite agreement aimed at easing immediate problems posed by growing unemployment. He told cheering crowds that the all employers, including the Government, would be required to find work for an additional ten per cent of their existing labour force.

The proposed agreement due to come into effect on July 1st, is similar to one reached in 1964.

In part of his speech President Kenyatta said:
Millions of Kenyans throughout the country celebrated the anniversary with parades, meetings, parties and general scenes of jubilation.
