  • Description

LABUAN TOWN ON LABUAN ISLAND OFF THE WEST COAST OF SABAH REMAINS QUIET AND RELATIVELY UNAFFECTED BY THE LARGE AIR BASE ON THE ISLAND, WITHIN FOUR MILES OF THE TOWN. IT'S PROSPEROUS AND THE POPULATION LEAD AN EXTREMELY PEACEFUL AND QUIET EXISTENCE.

LABUAN AIR BASE ON THE ISLAND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT IN THE BORNEO TERRORISTS. DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR THE JAPANESE USED LABUAN AS THEIR MAJOR AIR BASE OF THE AREA, AND HAD APPROXIMATELY 600 AIRCRAFT ON THE ISLAND. THE SURRENDER FOR THE BORNEO STATES, WHICH IS NOW PART OF MALAYSIAN, WAS ACCEPTED FROM THE JAPANESE ON THE ISLAND.

SMALL ARMY RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT MAKE FREQUENT TRIPS TO THE BORDER AREAS FOR SURVEILLANCE DUTY. THEY ARE AN IMPORTANT UNIT IN THE FLEET OF AIRCRAFT STATIONED ON LABUAN, AS THEIR LOW FLYING SPEED ENABLES THEM TO BE USED FOR DETAILED PHOTOGRAPHY AND LOW FLYING SCRUTINY OF THE JUNGLE AREAS WHERE INTRUDERS MAY BE IN REFUGE.

ON THIS ISLAND, HELICOPTERS ARE CONSTANTLY IN USE, AND THE ONLY TIME THEY ARE ON THE GROUND DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS IS FOR SERVICING AND REPAIRS. THEY ARE INVALUABLE IN THE RUGGED JUNGLE TERRAIN OF BORNEO, WHERE IN MOST PLACES ROADS ARE UNKNOWN, AND THE WATERWAYS ARE THE COMMON MEANS OF TRANSPORT.

A RECENT ACQUISITION TO THE BASE ARE A NUMBER OF GUARD DOGS. THEY RELIEVE A GREAT NUMBER OF PERSONNEL FROM OTHER DUTIES, AS THEY CAN DETECT UNAUTHORISED PERSONS INSTANTLY, AND CAN INTERCEPT ACCURATELY WITHOUT THE GUARDS HAVING TO RESORT TO HAPHAZARD GUNFIRE.

THE AIRBASE IS STRATEGICALLY SITUATED TO THE MAINLAND OF BORNEO - A POSITION WHICH ENABLES THE RAF AND THE ROYAL MALAYSIAN AIR FORCE TO CARRY OUT OPERATIONAL DUTY OVER A GREAT AREA OF THE BORNEO TERRITORIES.
