  • Description

TENS OF THOUSANDS LINED MADRID STREETS YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) TO WATCH THE MILITARY PARADE MARKING THE "TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF PEACE" UNDER GENERAL FRANCO SINCE THE CIVIL WAR ENDED.

THE PARADE WAS THE BIGGEST SINCE THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR IN 1939. NONE WAS STAGED LAST YEAR BECAUSE OF POPE JOHN'S DEATH.

SEVENTY-ONE YEAR OLD FRANCO STOOD FOR 90 MINUTES TAKING THE SALUTE OF 13-THOUSAND SOLDIERS, SAILORS AND MARINES IN THE PARADE OF SPAIN'S NOW CONSIDERABLY MECHANISED ARMED FORCES.

PRINCE JUAN CARLOS OF BOURBON AND HIS WIFE WERE GIVEN PREFERENTIAL PLACES AT THE PARADE. PRINCE CARLOS, 26, BELIEVED TO BE FAVOURED BY THE SPANISH LEADER AS HIS SUCCESSOR AS HEAD OF STATE, STOOD BEHIND THE GENERAL WITH A SMALL GROUP OF SENIOR MILITARY OFFICERS.
