  • Description

The normally bustling streets of Accra, the capital of Ghana, on a warm Saturday night are now a thing of the past.

The Government recently decided to ban the use of petrol by private cars from 6 pm on Friday night to 6 pm Sunday night.

The move to ban the use of petrol was made to help conserve fuel following a 10 per cent increase in oil prices announced recently by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (O.P.E.C.).

The Ghana Government said the cut down on petrol consumption would assist Ghana's balance of payments.

In a statement explaining why the ban had been imposed, the Government said it was not going to pass on the total price increase, estimated at between five and six million pounds sterling.
