    Two persons were reported killed, and at least eight people wounded, in a shooting on the "Green Line" which separates the Christian east from the Moslem west sides of Beirut, on Wednesday (28 February).

    SYNOPSIS: This is the district of Ras Dekouaneh, where the incident happened. There was considerable tension in the area for some time after, with only a few cars crossing the line which forms one of the main gates between the two sectors of the capital.

    An Army Sergeant and his wife were killed when a shell hit their car, this burnt out Peugeot. There are differing reports of the incident. The right-wing Falangist radio quoted a military spokesman as saying that one man was killed and five people wounded when Syrian troops serving with the Arab peace-keeping force fired at a Militia position east of the line, facing the National Museum. The spokesman said that the militia did not return the fire.

    But some eyewitnesses said there was firing from the Christian Sector. They said one man was killed and at least three people were wounded west of the line in the shootings. And while the tension prevailed some of the sick and elderly were evacuated.
