  • Description

The rebel-seized Portuguese liner Santa Maria has brought Brazil - a former Portuguese colony into the world headlines, and the spotlight has also turned on a man living in the Brazilian city of Sao Paolo.

He is General Humberto Delgado who confirmed during this filming-when he was receiving foreign journalists and other visitors -- that he and Captain Henrique Galvao had between them planned the take-over at sea of the Santa Maria.

General Delgado has emerged as the leader of those who oppose Dr. Salazar's virtual one-man rule in Portugal.

He has a distinguished military and administrative career, and in 1958 received an unexpectedly high number of votes when he ran for the Portuguese Presidency. Later, he sought refuge in the Brazilian Embassy in Lisbon, and afterwards came to continue his opposition campaign from Sao Paolo.

As talks for disembarking the Santa Maria's passengers take place at sea, the question is, what will be the next move of General Delgado and his supporters.
