Background: Alleged leading members of the Mafia were taken handcuffed to court in Nassau County, New York, yesterday (June 30) to face Contempt charges. Their arrest had spared of demonstration in New York City the previous day by thousands of Italian Americans.

The Contempt charges stem from the refusal to answer questions, or to giving evasive answers to questions posed by the Grand Jury.

The maximum sentence any of the accused face is one year of the Contempt charge.

The demonstration crowd on the previous day to the court hearing was estimated at 40,00.

Organisers of the protest -- the Italian-American Civil Rights League -- had hoped that 250,000 people would join the demonstration.
