Second on points in the driving championship is Argentine Carlos Reutemann.

Japan has high hopes for the British title too. This is its new Formula 1 car, the Maki. Japanese driver Hiroshi Fushida has been testing the car but it will be entered for Australian Dave Walker.

This was the first of four practice sessions for the Grand Prix. Here...Swiss driver Clay Regazzoni... and West German Jochen Mass who recorded the eight and tenth fastest times respectively.

The Japanese Maki goes through its paces. The British Grand Prix is the tenth of fifteen races counting in the year's Formula One world championship.
