  • Description

Workmen today began dismantling Bastille Day fairground machines at Les Halles -- the last occupants of the famous food market's towering pavilions. Demolition of six of the century old iron and glass pavilions started today after a short reprieve. Two underground railway stations and a commercial and administrative complex are to replace them by the mid 1970's.

SYNOPSIS: Demolition work today began on Les Halles in Paris....the city's major market place for centuries. The first step was the dismantling of fairgrounds erected for the celebration of Bastille Day yesterday. Then the demolition experts moved in. Six of the iron and glass pavilions which has served Parisians for countless years were sent crashing by the huge weights of modern society. In their place, the authorities will build two underground railway stations and a commercial and administrative complex which will be completed by the mid 1970's.

The decision to pull down Les Halles caused a storm of protest among French and Foreign Conservationists and scores of protestors have been detained during demonstrations to save the complex. Workmen have already dismantled all the improvised structures that have shared the pavilions with the fairs in the two year interval since the vegetable wholesalers moved out.
