  • Description

South Vietnamese Government troops remain locked in battles with communist forces in their efforts to recapture the Ba Den (Black Virgin) Mountains.

In the 24 hours before down on Thursday (30 January), the South Vietnamese Command reported 80 communist shelling incidents throughout the country.

Tay Ninh Province has been particularly hard-hit, with more villages abandoned as inhabitants scrambled for safety elsewhere, while more government troops move int.

Meanwhile on Thursday, President Nguyen Van Thieu asked the United States for an additional 300 million dollar (about 130 million pounds sterling) to sustain the fight against what he described as increased communist war potential.

President Thieu told newsmen that the communities had almost doubled their potential for carrying on the fight in the two year since the Paris peace agreements were signed.

He added that, at the same time, the combat capacity of the South Vietnamese Army has been reduced by 60 percent following the aid cutback by the American Government last year and the withdrawal of troops after the Paris agreement.

South Vietnam is currently receiving 700 million dollars (300 pounds sterling) a year from the United States.
