  • Description

Five years after being deposed, ex-King Ntare of Burundi returned home last Thursday -- and was promptly arrested by the authorities in Bujumbura, the Burundi capital. Local radio reports claimed that the former king had been arrested while trying to lead white mercenaries in an invasion attempt.

But the Uganda government today (Tuesday) released documents which claimed to show that ex-King Ntare was returning home under an amnesty granted by president Michel Micombero. Last month, President Amin of Uganda had offered to mediate between the Burundi authorities and the former king.

Our library film dates from the time when King Ntare was deposed. He was visiting the Zaire Republic -- then Congo-Kinshasa -- when M. Micombero announced that the monarchy had been overthrown and a Republic set up in 1966. Mwame Ntare had come to the throne earlier than a year by deposing his own father.

SYNOPSIS: Flashback to 1966 -- and a crowd waits at Kinshasa airport to greet the new leader of Burundi, King Ntare, seen here on the left. It was during his Kinshasa visit that the nineteen-year-old-king was deposed by a bloodless coup. The sequel came last week, when he returned home after five years of exile -- and was promptly arrested by the Burundi authorities. Radio reports claimed that he had been trying to lead white mercenaries in an attempted invasion. But a different story has come from the authorities in nearby Uganda.

The Uganda government this week released documents claiming to show that ex-King Ntare had been returning home under an amnesty granted by President Michel Micombero -- the man who deposed him and set up the new Republic. The amnesty followed efforts by Ugandan President Amin to mediate between the Burundi authorities and the former king. Mwame Ntare originally seized power by ousting his father.
