Background: Four Israeli civilians were killed and seven wounded on Sunday (5 October) when a bomb exploded in the Tel Aviv suburb of Givatayim. A Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) spokesman in Damascus claimed its Abu-Hassan Salameh group was responsible for the attack.

SYNOPSIS: Israeli police detained many Arab workers in the vicinity of the post office but most were released after questioning. Police believe the booby-trapped packet was left on a post office counter.

The attack at Givatayim came less than 48 hours after the bombing outside a Paris synagogue. The Israeli Cabinet linked the two attacks. It argued that terrorist organisations operating in France and other countries are collaborating with PLO. The Cabinet insisted that no distinction could be made between anti-Israelism, anti-Zionism or anti-semitism.

In the Givatayim bombing about twelve people were waiting to be served when the blast rocked the building. Within seconds the post office interior was wrecked. Part of the ceiling collapsed on some of the occupants while others tried to escape in panic. The police warned the public to be alert against a possible new wave of Palestinian sabotage attacks.

Referring to the bombing in the French synagogue, Israeli Interior Minister Yosef Burg said it was less than 40 years since the French went through the bitter experience of Nazi domination. It is a paradox, he said, that of all countries neo-Nazism should exist in France.
