  • Description

President Nixon, who's approaching 61, was taken to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington on Friday (13th July) suffering from viral pneumonia.

Among his last official engagements on Thursday was a brief meeting at the White House with the West German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel. Mr. Nixon earlier postponed the meeting while he underwent a medical examination. Afterwards he was given chest X-rays which confirmed the preliminary diagnosis of viral pneumonia.

Mr. Nixon called his personal physician early on Friday morning after waking with "discomfort" in his right chest area. He is expected to be in hospital for about a week and is reported to be in excellent spirits. An official White House statement said the President would carry on his normal work from his bed. His doctor has dismissed suggestions that Mr. Nixon's illness might have been brought on by worry over the Watergate scandal.

Herr Scheel's thirty-five minutes of talks with President Nixon covered the likelihood of a US - European summit later this year when President Nixon is to visit Europe. US officials said their talks had also included Atlantic alliance problems, including European security and negotiations between North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the Warsaw pact countries for a mutual reduction of forces in Europe.

Herr Scheel also had talks with President Nixon's adviser, Dr. Henry Kissinger and the American Secretary of State, Mr. William Rogers. Herr Scheel told reporters his talks with Dr. Kissinger were constructive and were part of the whole dialogue between the United States and Europe in preparation for Mr. Nixon's visit.
