As he arrived, the official Peking People's daily newspaper produced a welcoming article praising him for abrogating the Somali-Soviet friendship treaty and expelling Russian military experts last year. An the newspaper praised somalia's courageous decision to safeguard its hard-won independence which had demonstrated "the heroism of a small and weak country which dares to wage an unrelenting struggle against a superpower".
