Cold weather continued to grip much of the United States. Wednesday (20 Jan.) From the heart lands of the middle West to the East Coast. Heavy snows marked the cold spell in the M.D. West and the East Coast suffered through freezing temperatures.
The coldest weather so far this winter has hit the entire eastern half of the United States. Snow made travel hazardous in much of the Midwest. Plows were used to clear major reads. In some communities schools were closed because of the snow and cold.
In the New York City area, ice clogged rivers. The temperature got down to four degrees above zero Fahrenheit -- only three degrees above the record low for the date. But there was one consolation the cold kept criminals off the streets during the New York policemen's job action possible avoiding a disaster in America's largest city.
