  • Description

Police found dynamite, explosive chemicals and weapons in the rubble of a New York apartment following a bomb blast on Saturday (March 28).

Two men were blown up in the explosion; one died instantly while the other is in a critical condition after losing both arms and a leg. Police claim the two men -- both negro students -- were manufacturing bombs in the apartment when one exploded.

Police later charged the critically injured student with murdering his roommate.

A police inspector investigating the explosion said the apartment was being used as a bomb factory. "There was equipment and material to make at least a dozen bombs," he added.

The inspector, describing the debris, said: "in the refrigerator we found bottles of potassium chlorate, potassium nitrate, sulphuric acid, smokeless black powder and ammonium nitrate". Two pipe bombs were also found, together with a sawn-off shotgun, a revolver and literature from the militant negro Black Panther organisation.

The damaged apartment was on the top floor of a six-storey building. in the Manhattan district of New York. The blast was described by a neighbour as "like a small earthquake."
The explosion follows a wave of bomb blasts in the New York area. In february a series of explosions killed at least three people in another Manhattan building -- also said to have been a bomb factory. More than 2,200 bomb scares have been investigated by police in the past three weeks.
