The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Abdel Halim Khaddam arrived in Algiers on Wednesday?
The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Abdel Halim Khaddam arrived in Algiers on Wednesday (19 February) for talks with President Boumedienne concerning recent diplomatic moves in the search for peace in the Middle East.
Following Dr. Henry Kissinger's visit the move is seen as the expected diplomatic counter-offensive aimed at preventing a separate peace settlement in the Sinai which would leave Syria militarily and politically isolated.
The Foreign Affairs Minister has visited major Gulf States and plans to continue to Morocco and Libya carrying letters from President Assad.
The Syrians are understood to be seeking insurances that any partial Israeli settlement with Egypt in the Sinai should be matched by similar withdrawals on the Golan Heights and that final details of any moves should be worked out around a table in Geneva.
