  • Description

THREE HUNDRED ITALIAN WORKERS JAN 13 STARTED WORKING FOR RENAULT, THE BIG STATE-OWNED FRENCH CAR MANUFACTURING FIRM. ALREADY, MORE THAN 700 ITALIANS HAVE TAKEN UP EMPLOYMENT IN THE PAST FEW DAYS AT THE RENAULT WORKS AT BILLANCOURT, NEAR PARIS.

A YEAR HAS GONE BY SINCE THE COLLAPSE OF RENAULT'S MARKET IN THE UNITED STATES. THE FIRM HAS ALREADY CAUGHT UP AND CONSOLIDATED SALES IN FRANCE AND ABROAD. THE NEW "R-3" AND "R-4" MODELS HAVE AROUSED MUCH INTEREST, AND THE FIRM'S ORDER BOOKS ARE FULL. MORE WORKERS WERE NEEDED, BUT FEW FRENCHMEN WERE FORTHCOMING.

THE EXTENDED DURATION OF MILITARY SERVICE IS GIVEN AS ONE REASON. ANOTHER IS THAT WORKERS IN BRITTANY, WHERE NEW INDUSTRIES ARE ASSURED, ARE NOT PREPARED TO LEAVE FOR THE CAPITAL. A SYSTEMATIC SEARCH FOR LABOUR HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT SINCE LAST NOVEMBER; AND IN SPITE OF IMPROVED CONDITIONS, LODGINGS PROVIDED, AND A SALARY OF 700 NEW FRANCS A MONTH, NOT MORE THAN 200 FRENCHMEN CAME FORWARD.

RENAULT THEN LOOKED TO ITALY FOR LABOUR.
