  • Description

Thousand of people from eight villagers on the island of Euboea about 100 miles (160 km) from Athens gathered in the village of Prokopi on Sunday (18 May) to demonstrate against control of the island being in hands of a former British M.P., Francis Noel-Barker.

The villagers were protesting against the "oppression" of Mr. Noel-barker, whose family has owned 300,000 acres (121,000 hectares) of the island 1832.

The villagers called on the Government to expropriate Mr. Noel-Baker's property and redistribute it amongst the landless and poor villagers of the area.

The Orthodox Church of Euboea and the Revolutionary Communist Movement of Greece supported the marchers.

After listening to speeches in the village, the crowds arched to the property where a large police contingent was standing guard.

Although noisy, the demonstration was not violent.
