  • Description

In Djakarta on Monday, an Indonesian Army major-general was jailed for two years on a charge in connection with arms smuggling to Biafra during the Nigerian war.

A military court convicted Major General Hartono, former assistant to the Army Chief of Staff, of forging military documents for the purchases of arms abroad.

The prosecution said the arms were not in fact brought to Indonesia. Instead they were consigned to Biafra - only to be confiscated before they got there.

The court told that General Hartono, the highest Indonesian officer ever to be tried, received US$30,000. In his defence, he said he was forced to this to supplement the army's budget which he thought was insufficient.

General Hartono, who said he would appeal, will have to spend only five months in jail as he has already served 19 months in detention.
