    VETERAN AMERICAN PILOT MAX CONRAD CRASHED HIS LIGHT AIRCRAFT AT THE SOUTH POLE EARLIER THIS WEEK ON A ROUND THE WORLD FLIGHT.

    THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED SHORTLY AFTER TAKE OFF IN POOR WEATHER AT THE SOUTH POLE AIR STATION, AS MR CONRAD BEGAN A 2,700 MILE FLIGHT TO SOUTH AMERICA.

    HIS AZTEC WAS BARELY FOUR MINUTES AIRBORNE IN FREEZING FOG WHEN IT WENT INTO A TURN AND A PROPELLER STRUCK A SNOW BANK. THE AIRCRAFT BELLIED INTO SOFT SNOW AND SANK UP TO THE WINGS.

    MR CONRAD WAS UNHURT BUT HIS AIRCRAFT CALLED "WHITE PENGUIN" WAS BADLY DAMAGED. THE U.S. NAVY LATER FLEW MR CONRAD FROM MCMUDO SOUND TO THE SOUTH POLE TO INSPECT THE WRECKAGE.
