  • Description

    Hotel accommodations
in London is becoming harder to find.

Twenty-five per cent of the estimated eight million tourists who will visit the
United Kingdom this year are under 24-years-old. And it is this age group which
    is hardest hit.

This year many European travel organisations have block-booked the inexpensive
youth hostel facilities. This has left the non-group youngster, who in the pat
could arrive in England and be virtually assured of a roof, to fend for
    himself.

Christian Action, a London-based charity organisation, has come to the aid of
the wandering, un-placed youngsters. In the London suburb of Wormwood Scrubs the
group has established a tent city which presently sleeps 150 persons per night.

Christian Action officials expect that by the end of the summer rush the "city"
will be temporary home to 500 per night.

The prices, well within the mans of the young tourist, average around 30p (75
cents) for a bunk-bed and blanket. With toilet and washroom facilities
available, many of the occupants say the area compares favourably with hostel
    facilities.

SYNOPSIS: These are the luxury accommodations in London's tent city which houses
the growing number of young travellers who cannot find or cannot afford hotel or
    youth hostel lodgings.

There are no wakeup calls and the neighbours rarely complain in this site set up
by Christian Action...a London charity organisation.

A bed with blanket costs the unplaced tourist 30 new pence (approximately
75-cents). And guests such as Alan Williamson of Zambia are happy to pay.

Mary Lou Collins of Brisbane, Australia plans her day's activities while the
late risers make their way to the washroom facilities on the converted football
    field.

Running water and soap are precious commodities. The tourists take advantage of
the sanitary condition but learn quickly the hours allocated for washing.

The day really starts for the 150-tourists the camp has been taking in each
night, when the refreshment wagon arrives around 9 o'clock each morning.

Breakfast is cheap and taken informally on the lawns which Christian Action
expect will house five hundred wanderers a night before the summer rush is
    ended.

Hans Otto and his friend from Mahl, Germany summed up the feeling of most
campers by calling this experience an exciting adventure.
