    SOME 20,000 TOKYO STUDENTS AND RAILWAY WORKERS DEMONSTRATED AT THE SHINJUKU RAILWAY STATION IN TOKYO LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THE AMOUNT OF PETROL AND AMMUNITION BEING TRANSPORTED TO THE UNITED STATES MILITARY BASE AT TACHIKAWA. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS PART OF A SERIES OF ANTI-AMERICAN PROTESTS.

    SOME 300 DEMONSTRATORS TRIED TO HALT FREIGHT TRAINS THEY THOUGHT WERE GOING TO THE BASE, BUT AFTER SEARCHING SEVERAL TRAINS THEY GAVE UP AND JOINED THE BODY IF THE STUDENTS IN THE STATION.

    MORE THAN 3,000 RIOT POLICE MOBILISED FOR THE DEMONSTRATION, BUT THERE WAS NO MAJOR VIOLENCE. A FEW SCUFFLES BROKE OUT, AND A HANDFUL OF DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARRESTED.
