    ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS WAS OVERWHELMINGLY RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT YESTERDAY (MONDAY) IN THE FIRST CYPRUS PRESIDENTIAL POLL SINCE INDEPENDENCE IN 1960. THE ARCHBISHOP COLLECTED ALMOST 96 PER CENT OF THE POLL.

    THE ARCHBISHOP'S OPPONENT, 40-YEAR OLD PSYCHIATRIST, DR. TAKIS EVDOKAS, RECEIVED LESS THAN FOUR PER CENT OF THE VOTE.

    PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS ARE SCHEDULED EVERY FIVE YEARS IN CYPRUS, BUT INTER-COMMUNAL STRIFE BETWEEN GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS HAS BLOCKED POLLS INDEPENDENCE.

    THE ARCHBISHOP WAS ALWAYS CONSIDERED A SURE WINNER; FROM THE START OF COUNTING IT BECAME OBVIOUS AND SCHOOLCHILDREN PARADED THE CAPITAL'S STREETS WAVING BANNERS AND CHANTING SLOGANS PRAISING THE PRELATE.

    WHEN THE RESULTS WERE ANNOUNCED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE CROWDED THE STATELY GOTHIC ARCHED RECEPTION ROOMS OF THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE TO CONGRATULATE THE PRESIDENT AND KISS THE ARCHBISHOP'S RING.

    IN A BRIEF STATEMENT THE PRESIDENT SPOKE OF THE MANY PROBLEMS POLITICAL, PARTICULARLY POLITICAL, FACING THE COUNTRY, BUT HE SAID HE PREFERRED NOT TO MAKE ANY PROMISES IMMEDIATELY.
