Background: In the Middle East itself the Navies of the major powers are on the move. The Russians have sent at least one warship from the Black Sea into the Mediterranean. And they obtained permission from Turkey to send ten warships and supply vessels through the Bosporus during the next few days.
The Russians are believed to have about twenty ships in the Mediterranean already. Some vessels have been watching exercises of the American sixth fleet -- like uninvited guests says the U.S. naval command.
The American fleet is believed on manoeuvres off Crete, but one of their aircraft carriers is due to pass through the Suez Canal on its way to the crisis area -- the Gulf of Aquaba and the Red Sea, about now.
The canal is just wide enough to take the carrier, The Intrepid, built during World War Two and converted for anti-submarine warfare. President Nasser gave permission for the warship to pass through the Canal--by tomorrow it should be in the area of the Gulf of Aquaba.
