    Former French General, Maurice Challe, who went on trial in Paris May 29 for his part in last month's Algiers revolt, told the court there had never been any plot against France itself, or the regime: his plan had been to pacify Algeria so that it could be restored to France.

    He said the attempt had failed because his troops could only have held the main cities by brutal methods, and this he was determined to avoid.

    On trial with Challe is another former General, sixty-three-year-old Andre Zeller. He collapsed twice while making his statement. The hearing was adjourned until next day. Both men are charged with leading an insurrection, which carries the death penalty...
