The Cuban Foreign Ministry announced November 10 that they had accepted the appointment of Mr. Shen Kien as Communist Chinese Ambassador to Cuba - the first Ambassador ever to be sent by Peking to a Latin American country. Mr. Kien accompanied by his wife arrived recently in Havana to take up his duties.
He was given a warm welcome at the airport by Nunez Jimenez, Chief of Cuba's National institute of Agrarian Reform; Manuel Yepe, Cuban Chief of Protocol; the Soviet Ambassador, and a large crowd of Cuban Chinese. This was followed by a parade of Cuban Chinese militiamen carrying Cuban and Russian flags, and rifles.
An economic agreement was recently concluded between Communist China and Cuba under which China will provide an Interest-free loan of 240 million roubles (about GBP21 million) between 1961 and 1965. Also, under a trade protocol for 1961, China will buy a million tons of sugar and other Cuban exports.
Today, Communist China maintains diplomatic relations with 26 non-communist countries, and trade and economic ties with 45 others.
