    Three people died and at least 40 were seriously injured on Friday (24 January) when an explosion ripped through a private luncheon club in the Wall Street financial district in New York.

    Fire Commissioner John O'Hagen said preliminary investigations showed that the blast at the Anglers Club was caused by explosives.

    The explosions seriously damaged many surrounding building including Fraunces Tavern where George Washington gave a historic farewell address to his troops in 1783.

    A Puerto Rican independence group has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
