  • Description

LIFE IS SLOWLY RETURNING TO NORMAL IN BUKAVU, CAPITAL OF CONGO KINSHASA'S KIYU PROVINCE, WHICH WAS DEVASTATED LAST YEAR IN STRUGGLE BETWEEN FOREIGN MERCENARIES AND THE NATIONAL CONGOLESE ARMY. MANY RESTORATION SCHEMES ARE UNDER WAY, INCLUDING THE CLEARING OF ROADS AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW AIRPORT AT KAMVUMU - ALL PART OF THE EFFORT TO RETRIEVE THE TITLE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWN IN THE PROVINCE.

BUILDINGS AND SHOPS STILL STAND EMPTY AS A RESULT OF THE LOOTING BEFORE AND AFTER THE DEPARTURE OF THE MERCENARIES WHO WERE FORCED TO WITHDRAW TO NEIGHBOURING RWANDA LAST NOVEMBER. BUT THE 'GHOST' TOWN IS FINDING A NEW LIFE. THE MINISTER FOR ECONOMICS AND INDUSTRY, MR. FAUSTIN NZEZA, HAS SET UP HEADQUARTERS IN A VILLA IN THE TOWN TO DIRECT THE RESTORATION, AND AN INTERNATIONAL APPEAL FUND IS PROVIDING FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO BRING NORMALITY TO THE ATTRACTIVE LAKESIDE TOWN.

THIRTY KILOMETRES FROM BUKAVU RISES THE NEW AIRPORT - OR AT LEAST IT WILL RISE THERE, AT KAMVUMU, IN THE NEAR FUTURE. IT WILL ALLOW DIRECT ACCESS TO BUKAVU, REDUCING THE DEPENDENCE UPON THE BURUNDI AIRPORT OF KAMEMBE, WHICH PROVED SUCH A PRECARIOUS LIFELINE DURING THE MERCENARY INVASION.
