The trial of three men accused of spying on behalf of Israel opened in Cairo, Egypt, May 16. They are 67-year-old Dutch shop manager Meewis Goudsward, 42-year-old Italian diver Ferdinando Pacciolla, and 28-year-old hotel manager Raimondo di Pietro, also Italian. They are the first of 16 men to be tried, in 6 separate cases, stemming from arrests last month.
Five judges, headed by Kamel el Bahnasawi, will hear the government prosecutors demand the death penalty for some of the accused. On the opening day of the trial Goudsward said he had reported to the Israelis on United Arab Republic military secrets - using invisible ink - and had photographed Alexandria coastal for???.
