THE AWARDS MADE THE BEATLES MEMBERS OF THE EXCLUSIVE "MOST EXCELLENT ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE" BUT IT CAUSED A STORM OF PROTEST LETTERS AND SOME MEMBERS OF THE ORDER HAVE RETURNED THEIR MEDALS TO THE QUEEN.

    BUCKINGHAM PALACE ANNOUNCES THE DECORATIONS BUT THE RECOMMENDATIONS COME FROM THE PRIME MINISTER, MR HAROLD WILSON WHO WAS SATISFIED THAT THE BEATLES HAD EARNED THE HONOUR WITH THE EXPORT OF THEIR RECORDS ALL OVER THE WORLD, PARTICULARLY TO NORTH AMERICA.
