    JAPAN'S FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT PATIENT, 18 YEAR OLD NOBUE MIYAZAKI, DIED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) AT THE SAPPORO MEDICAL COLLEGE ALMOST THREE MONTHS AFTER HE RECEIVED A NEW HEART. DOCTOR JURO WADA, WHO PERFORMED THE TRANSPLANT, SAID MIYAZAKI DIED AFTER AN ATTACK OF BRONCHITIS AND SERUM HEPATITIS.

    MIYAZAKI WAS THE WORLD'S 30TH HEART TRANSPLANT PATIENT. HE LIVED 83 DAYS AFTER THE OPERATION. OF THE 68 PEOPLE TO RECEIVE HEART TRANSPLANTS 35 ARE STILL ALIVE.

    DOCTOR WADA TOLD REPORTERS THAT MIYAZAKI SUDDENLY TOOK ILL YESTERDAY MORNING AFTER HE HAD TOLD DOCTORS THE PREVIOUS NIGHT THAT HE WAS HAPPY WATCHING TELEVISION.

    AFTER A RUSH FROM TOKYO WHERE HE WAS ATTENDING A MEDICAL RALLY, DOCTOR WADA WENT STRAIGHT TO THE MEDICAL COLLEGE HOSPITAL TO SEE MIYAZAKI.

    HE SAID THAT THE PATIENT'S DEATH WAS NOT DUE TO A FAULT IN THE OPERATION OF AUGUST 8 NOR WERE THERE ANY SIGNS OF THE BODY REJECTING THE NEW HEART. OTHER COMPLICATIONS HAD ARISEN, HE ADDED.

    MRS MIYAZAKI PRAISED DOCTOR WADA AND HIS TEAM FOR THEIR EFFORTS IN TRYING TO SAVE HER SON'S LIFE. SHE SAID HER SON'S PHYSICAL STRENGTH WAS WEAK AND HE WAS UNABLE TO WITHSTAND THE VARIOUS PRESSURES AND CONDITIONS OF THE TRANSPLANT.
