  • Description

In a guerrilla-style operation on Thursday night (5 December) communist forces overran a government outpost only 10 miles (16 kilometres) from Saigon.

During the fighting five militiamen were killed and four wounded. Six others escaped by swimming a river. The attackers temporarily occupied the outpost and mined the area when they left.

When radio contact was lost the district commander left his near-by headquarters with a relief force. A short distance from his post the Lieutenant-Colonel ran into an ambush and was killed when his jeep was hit by an anti-tank rocket.

Military sources said the ambush seemed to have been aimed at killing him specifically.

The attack was one of many around the country. Fighting between government and communist forces has intensified to coincide with the rice harvest as both sides are determined to defend their share of the vital crop.
