  • Description

The Governor of Bermuda, Sir Richard Sharples, and his Aide-de-Camp, were shot dead in the grounds of Government House, Hamilton, on Saturday (10 March) night. The police are holding several suspects, but won't say who they are. The state of emergency which has been declared, since the murders, allows the police to prevent suspects leaving the country. Sir Richard, who was 56 years old, had only been in office since last October. Before going to Bermuda he was the vice-chairman of Britain's ruling Conservative Party. He also served in both the Home and Foreign offices.

After a small dinner party on Saturday (10 March) night Sir Richard and his Aide went for a walk with Sir Richard's dog. Shortly before midnight they were shot dead while still in the grounds of Government house. The dog was also killed.

A government spokesman said that the murders were probably politically motivated, directed against the Office and not the men. In the past there has been trouble between Bermuda's different communities. The last serious trouble was rioting which took place in 1968.

Saturday night's killings in Hamilton came exactly six months after Bermuda's Police Commissioner was murdered. That case remains unsolved and it is not known whether the two incidents are connected.
