    Background: SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR

Four left-wing Salvadoran guerrillas who held more than sixty people hostage in a San Salvador bank surrendered peacefully to Red Cross officials on August 3 after a siege of nearly twenty four hours. The gunmen -- members of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) -- had demanded a sum of money and asylum in another country, but negotiators were unable to find a foreign government willing to give them refuge. During their August 2 takeover of the bank, located in the capital's working class area, the attackers shot dead a bank guard and took over 70 people hostage before releasing three small children and seven women. The rebels announced that their objective was "to impress the people with out struggle". Because of the bank guard's murder, the problem of foreign asylum was complicated by the authorities' inability to confirm that the gunmen were political dissidents rather than common criminals. The International Red Cross and Spanish Embassy officials were called in to mediate in the tense confrontation, eventually securing the freedom of all hostages -- who said upon release that they had been well treated. Police later displayed a quantity of weaponry, including two submachine guns, which the rebels had left behind. The four gunmen were subsequently placed in detention by security forces.
