  • Description

In Kuala Lumpur, South Korea restored its reputations as one of the best Asian soccer teams with a 3-0 victory over Japan in a semi-final of the Merdeka Tournament.

The win on Wednesday night puts South Korea against Malaysia in the final this weekend of the 11-nation tournament. Korean strategy relied on bottling up Japan's top goal scorer, top goal scorer, Kunishige Kamamoto - a job ably done by Korean centre half, Kim Ho.

The breakthrough for Korea, in the dark jerseys, came in the 29th minute when Park Soo Duck dribbled past three Japanese defenders and shot from five yards out into the left corner.

Japan's best chance came in the first half when left winger Yasuhiko Okudera went away on his own with a brilliant dribble that took him to within 15 yards of the goal. But his shot passed over the cross bar.

South Korea increased its lead in the 58th minute when right winger park Ee Chun slammed the second goal home after a melee in front of the goal. Their third goal came just five minutes later when Chun again took the honours after evading a strong challenge from the Japanese defence line.

Korea meets Malaysia's olympic sido in the final while Japan, bronze medallists in the 1968 olympics, play the Malaysian Second team for the minor places.
