  • Description

IN RHODESIA YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) PARTIES OF JOURNALISTS AND CAMERAMEN WERE ALLOWED TO INSPECT TWO MORE PRISONS. THE PRESS WERE FIRST ALLOWED INTO A RHODESIAN PRISON LAST WEEK WHEN THE SALISBURY CENTRAL PRISON WAS OPENED FOR VIEWING AS A COUNTER-MOVE AGAINST ALLEGATIONS OF SHOCKING CONDITIONS INSIDE THE PRISONS.

THE TWO PRISONS OPENED YESTERDAY WERE THE QUE QUE PRISON, ABOUT 120 MILES (224 KILOMETRES) SOUTH OF SALISBURY, AND THE CONNEMARA OPEN-TYPE JAIL, SOME 20 MILES (32 KILOMETRES) FURTHER SOUTH.

DURING YESTERDAY'S TOUR OF CONNEMARA JAIL, THE NEWSMEN INSPECTED THE CELLS AND SAW PRISONERS WORKING IN THE GARDENS AND ON A PRISON FARM. THEY SAW NO EVIDENCE WHICH WOULD SUPPORT THE ALLEGATIONS MADE BY THE LONDON-BASED ORGANISATION AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL, WHICH CLAIMED RHODESIAN PRISONS WERE OVERCROWDED, FILTHY, UNHYGIENIC AND LACKING IN TRAINED STAFF.

MR. NEIL GRANT, SECRETARY AT THE PRESENT REGIME'S MINISTRY OF JUSTICE, CONDUCTED THE PRESS MEN ON THE TOUR AND SHOWED THEM EVERYTHING THEY ASKED TO SEE.

AT CONNEMARA THERE ARE 297 AFRICAN PRISONERS AND TWO WHITES. THE JAIL HAS MODERN BLOCKS OF COMMUNAL CELLS, EACH HOUSING ABOUT 35 PRISONERS. THE CELLS ARE LIGHT AND WELL-VENTILATED, AND RELATIVELY SPACIOUS, SOME 36 FEET LONG AND 21 FEET WIDE (ABOUT 11 BY SEVEN METERS).
