  • Description

IN NAGOYA, CENTRAL JAPAN, RESCUE TEAMS ARE WORKING HARD TO RESCUE PEOPLE BURIED IN A LANDSLIDE THAT CAME IN THE WAKE OF THE DISASTROUS TYPHOON "VERA", WHICH HIT JAPAN END OF SEPTEMBER.

IT WAS SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE RESCUE WORKERS COULD GET TO THE PLACE FLOODED IN THE TYPHOON..AND THEN THEY HAD TO BE CONTENT WITH DIGGING UP DEAD BODIES.

LATEST REPORTS SAID MORE THAN 4,000 HAD DIED AND 1,000 STILL MISSING.

BUT IN OTHER AREAS, THE FLOODS HAD NOT SUBSIDED..AND TEN DAYS AFTER TEE TYPHOON 20,000 PEOPLE WERE STILL ISOLATED FROM THE CITY OF NAGOYA. RESCUE WORKERS HAD TO WADE THROUGH WATER AND RESCUE PEOPLE WHO WERE TAKEN TO SAFER AREAS BY HELICOPTERS. FORTY HELICOPTERS WERE WORKING FEVERISHLY TO BRING RELIEF TO THOSE WHO HAD SURVIVED THE ORDEALS OF THE PAST FEW DAYS.

ALL AVAILABLE TRANSPORT WAS PRESSED INTO SERVICE - AND LORRY LOADS OF REFUGEES WERE BEING MOVED INTO SAFER AREAS.

HELICOPTERS PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE IN THE RELIEF OPERATIONS AS WELL. PLACES ISOLATED BY FLOODS WERE SUPPLIED BY HELICOPTER. FOOD WAS BROUGHT INTO THE REFUGEE GAMES BY HELICOPTER, AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WERE AMONG THOSE WHO VOLUNTEERED TO COOK THE FOOD AND PREPARE ROOD PARCELS FOR DISTRIBUTION TO THE STRANDED PEOPLE. WHILE HELICOPTERS TOOK FOOD PARCELS TO STRANDED PEOPLE, STUDENTS CARRIED RICE BALLS TO THOSE STILL STRANDED ON ROOF TOPS AWAITING EVACUATION.

LUCKY WERE THOSE WHO SURVIVED THE WORST TYPHOON IN JAPAN'S LIVING MEMORY, BUT THEIR RELIEF WAS MARRED BY THE THOUGHT OF THEIR DEAR AND NEAR ONES WHO WERE NOT SO LUCKY. TO CONSOLE THE AGGRIEVED, PRIME MINISTER NOBUSUKE KISHI VISITED NAGOYA ASSURING PEOPLE OF GOVERNMENTS ASSISTANCE TO THE TYPHOON VICTIMS.

CROWN PRINCE AKIHITO ALSO VISITED THE NAGOYA AREA OFFERING SYMPATHY AND CONSOLING THE VICTIMS, WHO HAD SUFFERED SO MUCH IN THE TERRIFIC TYPHOON THAT LEFT BEHIND A TOLL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION IN CENTRAL JAPAN.
