  • Description

The Christmas lights in Carnaby Street, the street where London's 'trendy' fashions are sold, were switched on tonight (20 November) by the leader of one of Britain's most popular 'pop' groups, the Beegees, Barry Gibb.

The ceremony was attended, despite the cold November night, by a large crowd among which were many representatives of 'Swinging London', which Carnaby Street made famous.

While a group played on a balcony overlooking the street, Barry Gibb, on a platform with two mock astronauts as the news came through that the real Apollo 12 astronauts had been successful in redocking their spacecraft high above, ceremonially pulled the lever that blazed the night with colour.

it is reported that the internationally famous Christmas illuminations in nearby Regent Street are to be discontinued; those in Carnaby Street will perhaps in future years take their place.
