  • Description

In the past most African children have had to play with dolls purchased from Europe -- and consequently white in colour. But now a Brazilian firm has broken the toy doll colour bar and is winning big African orders by manufacturing black dolls.

The first customers for the new product were in Nigeria. A consignment of 5,000 dolls so delighted local children -- they'd apparently never seen black dolls before -- that more orders soon followed.

Customers in Kinshasa asked the Sao Paulo firm to make up a consignment of dolls wearing Zaire national costume. And now the Brazilians have bulging order books for another 50,000 dolls. They've stepped up production to 1,500 dolls a day to meet the demand.
