    SECURITY FORCES PATROLLED THE STREETS OF THE LEBANESE CAPITAL, BEIRUT, TODAY (SUNDAY) AND STOOD AROUND POLLING BOOTHS TO PREVENT VOTE-BUYING WHEN THE FIRST OF THREE PHASES OF THE COUNTRY'S GENERAL ELECTION BEGAN.

    NEARLY HALF A MILLION MEN AND WOMEN IN THE GOVERNORATES OF BEIRUT AND NORTH LEBANON ARE ELECTING 32 DEPUTIES TO LEBANON'S 99-MEMBER SINGLE CHAMBER. NORMALLY THERE WOULD BE 36 VACANCIES, BUT FOUR ARMENIANS HAVE BEEN RETURNED UNOPPOSED.

    VOTING BEGAN SLOWLY THIS MORNING, BUT WAS EXPECTING TO INCREASE THROUGH THE DAY BEFORE THE COUNT THIS EVENING.

    THE PRESENT PRIME MINISTER, DR. ABDULLAH AL-YAFFI AND THREE FORMER HOLDERS OF THE OFFICE TOGETHER WITH SEVERAL MINISTERS ARE AMONG THE 102 CANDIDATES CONTESTING THE 32 SEATS.

    THE SECOND PHASE OF THE ELECTION IS DUE TO BE HELD IN BIKAA AND SOUTH LEBANON NEXT SUNDAY, AND THE THIRD AND LAST IN MOUNT LEBANON ON APRIL 7.
