Israel's Prime Minister Mrs. Golda Meir has ordered an enquiry to be set up to?

  • Description

Israel's Prime Minister Mrs. Golda Meir has ordered an enquiry to be set up to establish the reason why workmen were allowed to drill four holes through part of the historic Wailing Wall in Jerusalem during the past week during attempts to provide support and anchorage for an 800-year-old neighbouring house which had suffered damage as a result of archaeological digging. The 2,000-year-old Wailing Wall is the only remaining remnant of the Jewish Second Temple.

The contractors ceased work on the house on Friday (II February) immediately word was received from the Rabbi in Charge of the Wailing Wall. They had been preparing to underpin the house...which accommodates several Arab families...with steel girders. The stones, in which holes had been cut, dated from the Eighth Century.

SYNOPSIS: The two-thousand-year-old Wailing Wall in Jerusalem which has become the centre of an official enquiry, and protests, after workmen had drilled four holes through part of it during efforts last week to provide anchorage for steel beams. These were to have supported an 800-year-old neighbouring house damaged during archaeological excavations. The Wailing Wall is the only remaining remnant of the Jewish Second Templa.

On Friday contractors ceased efforts to support the house, after the Rabbi in Charge of the Wailing Wall had notified Jerusalem's municipal authorities of the drilled holes.

This is one of the four holes...drilled in a stone dating back to the Eighth Century.

These cracks in the wall of the neighbouring house...which accommodates several Arab families...followed excavations which uncovered a smaller extension to the famous Wall. The contractors had attempted to save the house. After wide protests, Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, ordered an enquiry to establish who had authorised the drilling in the Wailing Wall.
