    IT WAS THE THIRD TIME PLAYER HAD WON THE PICCADILLY CHAMPIONSHIP - A RECORD FOR THE EVENT. EARLIER TODAY HE HAD BEATEN BRITAIN'S TONY JACKLIN IN A SUDDEN-DEATH PLAY-OFF, BOTH FINISHING LEVEL AFTER 36 HOLES IN FRIDAY'S SEMI-FINAL.

    GOLFING CONDITIONS THROUGHOUT THE EVENT HAD BEEN PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT WITH HEAVY RAIN CONTINUALLY FLOODING THE GREENS, BUT TODAY THE GROUND WAS DRIER AND BOTH FINALISTS WERE IN GOOD FORM.

    DURING THE FIRST 18 HOLES OF THE 36-HOLE FINAL PLAYER LED ON THREE OCCASIONS AND LEFT-HANDER CHARLES ON TWO. THE SOUTH AFRICAN HAD A FIRST ROUND FOUR UNDER PAR 70 AND FOLLOWED UP WITH 73. CHARLES HAD A 72 IN THE FIRST ROUND AND COVERED THE NEXT 18 IN 73.

    WITH HIS THIRD PICCADILLY CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY PLAYER BOOSTED HIS BRITISH WINNINGS BY GBP5,000 STERLING. HE SAID AFTER THE MATCH:
