    SOUTH VIETNAM MARINES HAVE SUFFERED HEAVY LOSSES IN THE SIX-DAT BATTLE AGAINST VIETCONG GUERILLAS AT BINH GIA, FORTY MILES (65 KMS) EAST OF SAIGON. IT WAS ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT TOTAL CASUALTIES AMONG THE GOVERNMENTS FORCES KNOWN SO FAR HAVE REACHED 134 KILLED, 94 WOUNDED AND OVER 50 MISSING DURING THE BATTLE.

    LAST WEDNESDAY, AND AMERICAN HELICOPTER WAS SHOT DOWN DURING THE BATTLE AND THE MARINES WERE SENT IN TO RECOVER THE WRECKAGE. WHEN THE MARINES REACHED THE BURNED-OUT HELICOPTER, IN A WOODED AREA NEAR THE TOWN, THEY WERE CAUGHT IN CROSS-FIRE FROM THE GUERILLAS. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT NINETY MARINES DIED IN THE RESCUE ATTEMPT. THE BODY OF ONE AMERICAN WAS FOUND NEAR THE WRECKAGE. THE OTHER THREE ARE MISSING.

    DURING THE BATTLE, ONE OF THE WORST IN THE HISTORY OF THE VIETNAM FIGHTING, THE VIETCONG HAD OCCUPIED BING GIA. AFTER HOLDING THE TOWN FOR TWO DAYS THE GUERILLAS MOVE OUT. THEY WERE ESTIMATED TO HAVE LOST MORE THAN A HUNDRED MEN IN THE FIGHTING.

    WHEN REINFORCEMENT REACHED THE AMBUSHED MARINES THEY FOUND THE SURVIVORS HAD GONE WITHOUT FOOD AND WATER OR MEDICAL CARE SINCE THEY HAD BEEN ATTACKED. MANY OF THE DEAD HAD BEEN STRIPPED OF HELMETS, BOOTS AND ARMS.
