  • Description

ON JANUARY 23RD DENMARK WILL HAVE ITS SECOND GENERAL ELECTION IN 15 MONTHS IN AN ATTEMPT BY THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO GAIN A WORKABLE MAJORITY.

IN NOVEMBER 1966 THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY WAS RETURNED WITH A MINORITY, AND HAD RELIED ON THE PEOPLE'S SOCIALIST PARTY FOR SUPPORT DURING THE PAST YEAR. HOWEVER, DISSOLUTION AND A NEW ELECTION BECAME INEVITABLE WHEN THE SOCIALIST PARTY FAILED TO GAVE ITS FULL BACKING TO THE GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSALS TO CURE WAGE AND PRICE RISES AND IMAGE A STANDARD THREE PER CENT INCOME TAX.

TEN PARTIES ARE CONTESTING THE ELECTION. EACH OF THE PARTIES ARE HOLDING NEWS CONFERENCES AT THE FOLKETING - THE DANISH PARLIAMENT.

IN THE PREVIOUS PARLIAMENT THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS HELD 69 SEATS; THE LIBERALS 35; CONSERVATIVES 34; PEOPLE'S SOCIALIST PARTY 20; RADICALS 13 AND THE LIBERAL CENTRE 4.

MORE THAN 3 1/2-MILLION PEOPLE ARE ENTITLED TO VOTE IN THE ELECTION.
