    French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing became the first French Head of State to visit Egypt on Wednesday (10 December). He began discussions with President Anwar Sadat on how France can help in diversifying Egypt's military arsenal (supplied, almost exclusively by the Soviet Union) and rebuild the Egyptian economy.

    President Giscard D'Estaing is on a five-day state visit to Egypt....returning a previous state visit by President Sadat to France last January.

    After his arrival President Giscard D'Estaing pledged full French assistance in developing Egypt's economy, shattered by three wars with Israel and heavy involvement with other pan-Arab causes.

    French sources quoted by Reuters said after the talks that an 8,000 million U.S. dollar (5,000 million sterling) project to build jet aircraft and missile bases in Egypt ranked high on the list of priorities discussed by the two leaders."
    President Giscard D'Estaing has already stated his willingness to supply Egypt with Mirage jets and other sophisticated military equipment "as long as these would not hinder the chances for a peaceful Middle East settlement".

    Egypt's armaments were previously supplied almost exclusively by the Soviet Union but there have been recent indications that relations between Egypt and the Soviet Union have deteriorated lately.

    The Egyptian Vice President, Air Vice Marshal Hosny Mubarak has met a delegation from the French Thomson-CSF Company which designs and builds the ground-to-air control weapons system and electronics equipment for Mirage jets.

    A spokesman for the French President said the talks between President Sadat and President Giscard D'Estaing also involved the use of nuclear energy "in the treatment of cancer and other diseases, electronic research and development and solar energy".

    The spokesman said the two leaders also discussed the forthcoming Oil and Energy Conference, due to be held in Paris next week (16 December) as well as the progress in dialogue between the European Common Market and the Arab world.

    SYNOPSIS: French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing and his wife arrived in Egypt Wednesday on a five-day state visit. The visit is the first there by a French Head of State. President Giscard D'Estaing is returning a visit made to France last January by the Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

    President Sadat was at Cairo airport to greet the French President and his wife. Later the two leaders held extensive talks aimed at French assistance for the Egyptian armed forces and economy.

    The French President has already stated his willingness to supply Egypt with Mirage jet fighters and other sophisticated military equipment "as long as these would not hinder the chances for a peaceful Middle East settlement. Egypt's armaments were previously supplied almost exclusively by the Soviet Union but there have been recent indications that relations between Egypt and the Soviet Union have deteriorated.     French sources quoted by Reuters said that among the topics discussed by the two leaders was a projected five thousand million pound project for the construction of jet aircraft and missile bases in Egypt. The sources also said that French engineers were already in Egypt drawing up plans for a vast armaments industry.

    A spokesman for the French President said the talks between the two leaders also covered the use of nuclear energy "in the treatment of cancer and other diseases, electronic research and development and the use of solar energy". The two leaders were also expected to discuss the forthcoming Oil and Energy Conference in Paris and progress in communication between the European Common Market and the Arab world.
