  • Description

The India, a curfew was clamped on parts of West Bengal as violence followed the collapse of the state government.

The crisis followed the resignation of the chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr Ajoy Mukherjee, who accused his Marxist coalition partners of a 'reign of terror' in the state.

His deputy and the Marxist leader, Mr Jyoti Basu, was given the chance of forming an alternative government and, when he failed, direct presidential rule from New Delhi was imposed.

Communal violence followed the government's resignation and yesterday (Thursday) police and army reservists were out in force when Moslems held a religious procession through the streets of Calcutta.

Hindus were kept at their distance as the Moslems paraded through the city in remembrance of the martyrdom of two grandsons of the Prophet Mohammed.

One of the hardest-hit areas in the communal rioting, in which 32 people died, was the town of Haihati. A curfew was placed on the town and violators were warned they would be shot.

Houses were set on fire during the rampage. Men of the Indian Rifles patrolled the deserted streets as fears grew that the government crisis could lead to more clashes in India's troubled industrial state.
