  • Description

The Egyptian and Israeli governments will study a United Nations peace proposal, delegates of the two warring countries told Thursday night's (October 11) United Nations Security Council meeting.

The meeting itself was at times, in the four hour session, little more than a slanging match between Egyptian Foreign Minister El-Zayyat, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Mohamed Zakaria Ismail and Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban.

United Nations secretary General Kurt Waldheim issued a statement asking for peace, but there was no agreement on ceasefire measures at the meeting. Many delegates felt the world body should keep trying, if necessary meeting throughout the weekend and beyond.

At the adjournment, the President, Sir Laurence McIntyre of Australia, announced that the council would meet again on friday evening (12th October).
