  • Description

CELEBRATIONS MARKING GREEK INDEPENDENCE WERE STAGED THROUGHOUT GREECE TODAY, (WEDNESDAY), WITH CHURCH SERVICES AND PARADES IN THE COUNTRY'S MAIN CITIES AND TOWNS.

MAIN CELEBRATIONS WERE STAGED IN ATHENS AND SAW THE FIRST OFFICIAL APPEARANCE OF KING CONSTANTINE THE SECOND. THE YOUNG MONARCH ATTENDED A SPECIAL TE DEUM AT THE ATHENS CATHEDRAL AND LATER TOOK THE SALUTE OF AN IMPRESSIVE MARCH PAST OF GREEK MILITARY MIGHT AT THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER.

TODAY'S FESTIVITIES MARKED THE 142ND ANNIVERSARY OF GREEK LIBERATION FROM THE YOKE OF OPPRESSION UNDER THE OLD OTTOMAN EMPIRE. IN THE EARLY PART OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY THE GREEKS CARRIED ON A LONG BITTER STRUGGLE TO FREE THEMSELVES FROM TURKISH RULE -- A STRUGGLE WHICH FIRED THE IMAGINATION OF THE ENGLISH POET LORD BYRON.

TAKING PART IN THE PARADE WERE UNITS FROM THE THREE SERVICES AS WELL AS TANKS, ROCKET UNITS, MISSILE SQUADRONS, HEAVY AND LIGHT ARTILLERY AND MECHANIZED INFANTRY.
