    THE ENGINEERS, WHO ARRIVED IN JESSELTON DIRECT FROM AUSTRALIA ABOARD THE ASSAULT-CARRIER, H.M.A.S. SYDNEY ON JUNE 4, LEFT FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE DESTINATIONS IN GROUPS OF 50 AND 60.

    THEY TOOK WITH THEM EARTHMOVING EQUIPMENT FOR OPENING UP THE STEAMY AND MOUNTAINOUS INTERIOR OF SABAH WHERE THE PEOPLE, UNTIL RECENTLY, HAVE BEEN LIVING AT A LOW LEVEL OF SUBSISTENCE. NEW ROADS WILL OPEN UP MANY THOUSANDS OF ACRES FOR CULTIVATION, THEREBY HELPING THE LOCAL PEOPLE TO ACHIEVE A BETTER STANDARD OF LIVING.

    THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY ENGINEERS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN MALAYSIAN BORNEO UNTIL THE END OF THIS YEAR. THEN, THEY ARE EXPECTED TO CARRY OUT SIMILAR TYPES OF CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECTS IN SARAWAK.
